Kia lives and trains in Regina, Saskatchewan. She got her start in paddling at the age of 9 after watching the Wascana Racing Canoe Club’s annual Canada Day Regatta with her father. He asked the coach if she could join, and once she tried it she was hooked.

Just 20 years of age, Kia can still compete as a Junior but has started competing in Senior International events. In 2007, Kia competed in the Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and came home with two medals – gold in the K-2 500m and bronze in the K-4 500m events. She won a total of six bronze medals in various events at the 2007 Canadian Championships, establishing herself as a serious contender in women’s kayak.

Kia trains out of the Wascana Racing Canoe Club. Her paddling goals are to be a member of the Canadian Olympic Team and to race the K-1 500m in under a minute and fifty seconds. When she is finished paddling, she hopes to become a lawyer.
