Five paddlers add their nominations to Pan Am Games team following trials

WELLAND, Ont. – Roland Varga of Richmond Hill, Ont., Philippe Duchesneau of Pointe-Claire, Que., Alexa Irvin of Halifax, and Una Lounder and Connor Taras, both of Dartmouth, N.S., were added to CanoeKayak Canada’s nomination list for the Pan Am Games following Saturday’s trials.

Varga and Duchesneau posted wins in the C-1 and K-1 1,000 metres respectively, Irvin and Lounder were 1-2 in the women’s K-1 500 and Taras took the men’s K-1 200.

They join 11 other paddlers who were pre-selected to the nomination list as members of Canada’s world championships team. 

The Pan Am Games scheduled for this October in Guadalajara, Mexico will be the last opportunity for Canadian paddlers to earn Olympic spots for next summer’s Games in London.  Canada collected three Olympic team spots last month at the world championships in Szeged, Hungary.

Here is the nominated line-up in sprint canoe and kayak for the Pan Am Games

MEN

K-1 200: Connor Taras, Dartmouth, N.S.

K-2 200: Hughes Fournel, Dorval, Que., and Ryan Cochrane, Windsor, N.S.,

K-1 1,000: Philippe Duchesneau, Pointe-Claire, Que.

K-2 1,000 : Richard Dober, Trois-Rivieres, Que., and Steve Jorens, Richmond Hill, Ont.

K-4 1,000 : Dober, Jorens, Duchesneau, Taras.

C-1 200 : Richard Dalton, Halifax.

C-1 1,000 : Roland Varga, Richmond Hill

C-2 1,000 : Gabriel Beauchesne-Sévigny, Trois-Rivieres, Que., and Andrew Russell, Dartmouth.

WOMEN

K-1 200 : Kia Byers, Regina.

K-1 500 : Émilie Fournel, Lachine, Que.

K-2 500 : Kristin Gauthier, Ottawa and K.C. Fraser, Mississauga, Ont.

K-4 500 : Gauthier, Fraser, Alexa Irvin, Halifax and Una Lounder, Dartmouth.
