Van Koeverden locks up world team berth with World Cup silver - June 5th, 2010

DUISBURG, Germany – Adam van Koeverden of Oakville, Ont., won the silver medal on Saturday in the men’s K-1 (kayak singles) 1,000 metre race to lock up a spot on the Canadian world championship team at the third and final stop on the paddling World Cup circuit.

Mark Oldershaw of Burlington, Ont., added a bronze in the men’s C-1 1,000.

In the men’s K-1 1,000, world champion Max Hoff of Germany won the gold medal in three minutes and 29.885 seconds with van Koeverden second in 3:31.553 and Aleh Yurenia of Belarus third in 3:32.373.  Van Koeverden needed to be the top Canadian to get the world team berth.  Angus Mortimer of Ottawa was ninth.

In the men’s C-1 1,000 final, world champion Vadim Menkov of Uzbekistan took the gold in 3:53.529, Sebastian Brendel of Germany was second in 3:54.929 and Oldershaw  followed for his fourth World Cup medal this season in 3:55.955.  Thomas Hall of Pointe-Claire, Que., was fifth in 3:58.683.

With his performance, Oldershaw can gain the world team spot in the 1,000 by finishing ahead of Hall at the second national team trials July 17-18 in Montreal.

Other Canadian results in finals: Jill D’Alessio of Middle Sackville, N.S., and Kathleen Fraser of Mississauga, Ont., were fifth in the women’s K-2 1,000; Genevieve Orton of Lake Echo, N.S., Émilie Fournel of Montreal, Kristin Gauthier of Ottawa and Kia Byers of Regina seventh in the women’s K-4 500 and Andrew Russell of Dartmouth, N.S., and Gabriel Beauchesne-Sévigny of Trois-Rivières, Que., ninth in the C-2 1,000.

Benjamin Russell of Dartmouth, Andrew Russell, Oldershaw and Hall were third out of three entries in the C-4 1,000.

Competition ends Sunday.
