Dartmouth’s Adam Tenwolde takes third spot at Hungarian national junior team trials - June 7th, 2010

SZOLNOK, Hungary – A seven-member Canadian junior canoe and kayak team competed at the Hungarian national junior team trials this past weekend and the highlight was a third place finish for Adam Tenwolde of Dartmouth, N.S., in the men’s K-1 (kayak singles) 500-metre.

It was one of two finals for Tenwolde who also grabbed eighth place in the K-1 1,000 metres on Saturday.

"It was a great and interesting experience racing in Hungary,” said Tenwolde. “In the 500, I kept my head in the race and pushed it right to the end and was pleased with the result. I was a little disappointed with my 1,000 placement but the 500 bronze was a good way to finish the weekend."

Other Canadian results in Sunday’s 500 races: Etienne Beauchesne of Trois-Rivieres, Que., was also in the K-1 500 final and took eighth spot.  Jason McCoombs of Dartmouth was fifth in the C-1 (canoe singles).

"I had a good 500 race, got off the line well and had a wicked start,’’ said McCoombs. ‘’Overall the weekend was a good experience and an eye opener for where I want to be next year."

Michelle Russell of Fall River, N.S., and Liz Girgulis of Calgary advanced to the women’s K-1 semifinals as did Tenwolde and Beauchesne in the K-2.  Alexa Irvin of Halifax and Russell were eliminated in the K-2 heats as were Girgulis and Andréane Langlois of Lac-Beauport, Que., in the K-2.

In the 1,000-metre races, there were three Canadian finalists.  McCoombs was seventh in the C-1 Tenwolde eighth in the K-1 and Irvin eighth in the women’s K-1.

Beauchesne and Langlois reached the semis in their respective K-1’s while the K-2 crews of Irvin and Russell as well as Langlois and Girgulis were eliminated in the heats.

" I thought the weekend of racing was an interesting experience and a chance to see how the Hungarians approach paddling,’’ said Russell.  ‘’It made me realize how much more I need to work on my race plan and improve my racing"

The Canadian juniors are in Europe primarily preparing for the Ruhr International Regatta in Bochum, Germany June 18-20 which is the big event in international junior paddling this season.
