Canadian junior paddlers ready to shine at Ruhr International Regatta - June 17th, 2010
BOCHUM, Germany- A seven-member Canadian junior paddling team will complete a three-week European trek at the Ruhr International Regatta canoe and kayak competition this Friday to Sunday (June 18-20) in Bochum, Germany.
The Canadian team members are Jason McCoombs of Dartmouth, N.S., in canoe, Adam Tenwolde of Dartmouth and Etienne Beauchesne of Trois-Rivieres, Que., in men’s kayak and Michelle Russell of Fall River, N.S., Alex Irvin of Halifax, Andréane Langlois of Lac-Beauport, Que., and Liz Girgulis of Calgary in women’s kayak.
The Canadians began their trip in Trakai, Lithuania to scout and train on the site of the 2011 world junior championships. After five days there, they moved on to Szolnok, Hungary for four days where they competed at the Hungarian national junior team trials. Then it was on to Essen, Germany on June 7 where they trained until arriving today in Bochum.
“Our team has enjoyed a great training experience here and is ready to race this weekend,” said national junior team coach Rob Stott. “Our paddlers are looking to go fast and they want to win some medals. The competition is going to be very strong particularly from the Germans who will field their best junior paddlers.”
Other powerful countries entered at the meet besides Germany and Canada are Australia, Japan and the U.S. With no world junior this season, this is the biggest meet of the year for these paddlers.
Events are schedule for 200, 500 and 1,000 metres.
