Two bronze medals for Canadian paddlers at Ruhr International Regatta - June 19th, 2010
BOCHUM, Germany – Jason McCoombs of Dartmouth, N.S., and Alexa Irvin of Halifax each won a bronze medal in Saturday’s 1,000 metre finals at the Ruhr International Regatta junior canoe and kayak competition.
In the men’s C-1 1,000, Peter Kretschmer led Germany to a 1-2 finish clocking four minutes and 32.57 seconds. Yul Oeltze was second in 4:35.92 and McCoombs followed in 4:36.91.
The Germans also grabbed the top two positions in the women’s K-1 1,000 under-23 race with Jennifer Klein winning in 4:19.11 and Debora Niche second in 4:19.99. Irvin took third spot in 4:22.07.
In other women’s finals, Michelle Russell of Fall River, N.S., and Andréane Langlois of Lac-Beauport, Que., were fourth and seventh respectively in the junior K-1 1,000 while in the K-2 1,000 Liz Girgulis of Calgary and Langlois were fourth and Russell and Irvin sixth.
On the men’s side, Adam Tenwolde of Dartmouth and Etienne Beauchesne of Trois-Rivieres, Que., were seventh and ninth respectively in the K-1 1,000.
Qualifying races were also held in the 500. Advancing to finals were Langlois and Girgulis in the K-2 and Irvin and Girgulis in the K-1. Tenwolde reached the B final in the men’s K-1.
Competition ends Sunday with the 500 finals and qualifying and finals in the 200.
