2010 JWCH Final - July 11th, 2010

Foix, France - At the culmination of the 2010 Canoe Slalom Junior World Championships, Canada leaves Foix with their heads high.

Canada was well-represented in today's semi-final. With four athletes spanning three disciplines, Team Canada was well-positioned to make the top-10 cut in the one-run semi-final, and battle it out for a medal in the finals.

The day began with the C1-W semi-final. Being the first time the C1-W class was added the Junior World Championship's schedule, this was a very historic race. Ottawa's Alexandra McGee, Canada's sole representative in the C1-W class, had a very strong showing in Friday's qualifier finishing 9th. Unfortunately, McGee missed two gates on the tough semi-final/final course, and with her 16th-place finish was unable to move through to the final. In the end Australia's Jessica Fox took the win, and claimed her first gold medal of the day.

Next up was the K1-W class, Canada was represented by Chilliwack's Jazmyne DenHollander, and Calgary's Marissa Dederer. Denhollander, who finished 15th, would have made the final had she remained clean; she incurred 4-seconds in penalties for touching two gates in her semi-final run. Dederer finished 21st, moving up from her 27th place finish in the qualifiers. A very strong performance by both girls. In the final, Australia's Jessica Fox took top-honours and claimed her second gold medal of the day! A very impressive, and historic feat.

The final category of the day with Canadian representation was the very competitive K1-M class. Ottawa's Michael Tayler, who finished 11th in the qualifier, raced very fast and strong in today's semi-final, but missed the top-10 cut by a mere 0.46 seconds. Tayler ended the day 13th, and posted Canada's top result of the day. Italy's Riccardo De Gennarro won the race in what was a very exciting final race.
