Ian Mortimer of Ottawa and Jamie Andison of Oakville added to Canadian team for world canoe and kayak championships - August 7th, 2010

OTTAWA – Ian Mortimer of Ottawa will join his brother Angus Mortimer on the Canadian paddling team for the world canoe and kayak championships set for August 18-22 in Poznan, Poland.  Jamie Andison of Oakville, Ont., was also another addition to bring the team size to 33.

Both Ian Mortimer and Andison will join Ben Russell of Dartmouth, N.S., and Olympic bronze medallist Thomas Hall of Pointe-Claire, Que., in the men’s C-4 1,000-metre. Canada was fifth in the event at the world championships last year with Mortimer, Russell and Hall.

The foursome trained this week in Dartmouth.

‘’Our training went very well and we are really excited about our chances for a medal,’’ said Mortimer.

This is the third sibling pair on the world team.  Andrew Russell and Benjamin Russell of Dartmouth, N.S., compete in men’s canoe while Hughes Fournel and Émilie Fournel of Dorval, Que., are on the men’s and women’s kayak squads respectively.

‘’When my brother and I are on the same team it’s always a huge bonus,’’ said Mortimer, 27, who’ll be racing for the third time at worlds with his younger sibling.  ‘’Our mother will travel to Poland to watch, so it will be pretty special for all of us.’’

Mortimer knows the talents of Andison as he raced with him in the C-2 1,000 most of this season.  The pair just fell short in its attempt to gain a berth on the world squad at trials last month.  This will be Andison’s first world championships.

‘’I’m very excited and looking forward to competing at worlds,’’ said Andison, 24.  ‘’Our practices were very promising, the boat was moving well and we have really good team dynamics.’’

Hall was among the 30 athletes announced to the squad on July 19 and Russell was added July 29.

The Canadian paddling team is coming off its strongest overall showing at the world championships last summer in Halifax.  Canada placed a best-ever third overall in the nation standings earning one gold and three bronze medals.
