Denhollander and Daniels set to take on World at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games - August 15th, 2010

Singapore, Singapore – Hayden Daniels (Calgary, AB) and Jazmyne DenHollander (Chilliwack, BC) along with coach Derek Beer (Abbotsford, BC) arrived in Singapore on August 10th, and are set to represent Canada in the first-ever Youth Olympic Games being held in Singapore, Singapore.DenHollander (K1-W) and Daniels (C1-M), who are both members of Canada’s Junior National Canoe Slalom team will compete in both the sprint and canoe slalom events at the Games. DenHollander, who is the Canadian Junior Champion, is coming off a 15th place finish at the 2010 Junior World Championships that was held earlier this summer in Foix, France. When asked about her thoughts on the competition, DenHollander commented, “In this very historic event, I am really looking forward to doing my best. I have never really done much sprint before, but, I think I have a pretty strong chance to win a medal in the Canoe Slalom event.”

As part of the competition program, both athletes will be competing in the sprint event. As canoe slalom is their primary discipline, both have joined their local sprint clubs to get some pointers. Daniels recently joined the Calgary Canoe Club at the Glenmore Reservoir, and has worked with club coach Mike Robinson. “Well, it is definitely a different technique (when comparing C1 slalom to C1 sprint), but I am getting better every session, so we will wait and see!”

The team recently arrived in Singapore and are preparing for their events which will run next week. The Canoe Sprint events will take place August 21-22 at the Marina Reservoir in Singapore, and the Canoe Slalom events will take place August 24-25, also at the Marina Resvoir.
