Thomas Hall hungry to pursue another Olympic medal in 2012 - August 27th, 2010
REGINA – Thomas Hall helped his Pointe-Claire Canoe Club to victories in the C-2 (canoe doubles) and C-4 1,000 metre finals on Friday and added a silver in the C-1 1,000 at the Sprint Nationals canoe and kayak championships.
More than 900 athletes representing 39 clubs across the country are at the Wascana Racing Canoe Club with races set to run until Sunday. Races are not only held at the senior level but for the juniors, juvenile and midget age classes.
The 28-year-old Hall, an Olympic bronze medallist in the C-1 1,000 in 2008, earned the C-2 win with Tamas Buday and the C-4 national crown with Buday, Pierre-Luc Laliberté and Marc Tarling. He was second to Mark Oldershaw of Oakville in the C-1.
‘’I’m really refocused now and driven for the London Olympics’’ said Hall. ‘’Getting the medal in 2008 gave me a lot of confidence. It was a nice affirmation that when I’m at my best I can be up there. Now my goal is to get back to that level.’’
Three-time Olympic medallist Adam Van Koeverden of Oakville also enjoyed a solid day with victories in the K-1 1,000 finishing ahead of Angus Mortimer and Corey Hamilton, both of Ottawa. In addition Van Koeverden teamed with Chris Pellini to give the Burloak Club a victory in the K-2 1,000.
In women’s competition, Emilie Fournel of Montreal took the K-1 500 ahead of Kia Byers of Regina in second and Una Lounder of Dartmouth in third. Byers however came back on her home waters to score wins in the K-1 200 and K-2 500 with Tiera McLeod.
Other winners included Mallorie Nicholson of Oakville in the women’s C-1 1,000 and Paul Bryant and Roland Vargas of Richmond Hill, Ont., in the C-2 500.
Competition continues Saturday.
