The road to London starts for Canadian paddlers at this week’s Pan Am Canoe and Kayak Championships - October 5th, 2010

OTTAWA – Three-time Olympic medallist Adam Van Koeverden of Oakville, Ont., and world championship medallist Richard Dalton of Halifax headline the Canadian team for the Pan Amerian canoe and kayak championships this Thursday to Sunday (October 7-10) in Mexico City.

The competition is a qualifying event for next year’s Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.  Those Games will be an Olympic qualifying event for Canada to earn spots for the 2012 Olympics.

“This is a tough event both physically and mentally,” said CanoeKayak Canada’s Graham Barton. “It is late in the season and after the world championships which is usually downtime for us.  Plus the Pan Am field is always getting stronger and there is the altitude challenge.  It’s a big test for next year with the Pan Am Games also set for October.”

Van Koeverden earned three World Cup medals this season and added a bronze in the K-1 (kayak singles) 500 at the world championships.  Other Canadian kayakers are Angus Mortimer of Ottawa, Hughes Fournel of Dorval, Que., Richard Dober Jr., of Trois-Rivieres, Que., Ryan Cochrane of Windsor, N.S., and Steve Jorens of Candiac, Que.

In canoeing, Dalton took the bronze in the C-1 200 at the worlds.  The other Canadian canoers are Andrew Russell of Dartmouth, N.S., Gabriel Beauchesne-Sevigny of Trois-Rivieres, Que., and Mark Oldershaw of Oakville, Ont., a four-time medallist this summer on the World Cup circuit.

In women’s kayak, the Canadian entries are Emilie Fournel of Montreal, Kia Byers of Regina, Genevieve Orton of Lake Echo, N.S., and Mylanie Barré of Lac-Beauport, Que.

All the Canadian seniors competed at the world championships.

Canada is also fielding a 15-member under-23 team and a 23-member junior squad.
