Hungarian Canoe Federation Wins Court Case - January 31st, 2012

In January 2012, incorrect information was circulated in Canada about a court case in Hungary concerning the Hungarian Canoe Federation and the Hungarian Dragonboat Federation. The information which was authored by the IDBF (Int’l DragonBoat Federation) and circulated within the Canadian dragonboat community indicated the Hungarian Dragonboat Federation had won a court case against the Hungarian Canoe Federation and that the result of this decision would prevent the Hungarian Canoe Federation (HCF) from operating any Dragonboat programmes. The facts of the case are entirely the opposite.

The Hungarian DB Federation appealed to the courts to prevent the Hungarian Canoe Federation from operating any Dragonboat programming. In October of 2011, the Hungarian Canoe Federation defended themselves against the claim. The courts threw out the case and required the Dragonboat Federation to pay the legal costs of the Canoe Federation. This is usually only done when the courts decide the original complaint is without cause and frivolous. The DB Federation was required to pay the Canoe Federation 125,000 Hungarian forints.

The Hungarian Canoe Federation acknowledges dragonboat paddling to be an important part of their organization. In addition, the International Canoe Federation has asked the IDBF for a public apology for the dissemination of incorrect information injurious to its Hungarian affiliate and other national affiliates. The offending documents on the Dragonboat Canada and IDBF websites have been removed.
