Anne Merklinger is being inducted into the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame - March 20th, 2010

On May 5, 2010 Anne Merklinger will be inducted into the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame for her amazing contributions to the world of Sport! "There were times in Anne Merklinger's young athletic career when her busy schedule would send chills through her body. She remembers those teenage years, when she'd finish her morning swimming practice and dash to the nearby curling rink for a game.

Without time to dry her hair, it would freeze after a couple of ends at the curling rink. But Merklinger put an end to her version of chilling out, when she stepped away from curling to focus on swimming. A 200-metre butterfly specialist, she swam on the Canadian team from 1977-81 and won a silver medal at the 1977 World University Games in Sofia, Bulgaria. But Canada's boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics ruined her dream of competing in her first and only Olympics. When she retired as a swimmer, Merklinger, 51, returned to curling and had a stellar provincial- and national-level career. On May 5, Merklinger will be inducted into the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame along with three other former athletes and one media member." -By Martin Cleary, The Ottawa Citizen
