MONTREAL – Olympic bronze medallist Thomas Hall of Pointe-Claire, Que.and 2009 World Championship bronze medalists Richard Dober Jr of Trois Rivieres and Andrew Willows of Appleton, Ontario headline the first of two canoe and kayak national team selection trials set for Montreal’s Olympic Basin this Saturday and Sunday (May 15-16).
The Canadian paddling team is coming off its strongest overall showing at the world championships last summer in Halifax. Canada placed a best-ever third overall in the nation standings earning one gold and three bronze medals.
Among the Canadian medalists were Andrew Willows of Gananoque, Ont., and Richard Dober of Trois-Rivieres, Que., in the men’s K-2 200-metre who’ll also be among the star attractions this weekend with the C-2 tandem of Gabriel Beauchesne-Sevigny of Trois-Rivieres, Que., and Andrew Russell of Dartmouth, N.S.
“Our national team athletes have been in Florida from February through April preparing for this season, most of them are now at home preparing for the selection event,” said CanoeKayak sprint high performance director Graham Barton. “After the World Cup tour we’ll be in training camps in Montreal for most of the summer getting ready for the worlds.”
There are a grand total of 467 entries for 12 events this weekend including a record 90 in the men’s K-1 1,000. The events for the men are the C-1 200 and 1,000-metre races, C-2 1,000, K-1 200 and 1,000 and junior C-1 and K-1 500. For the women, the K-1 200 and 500, C-1 200 and C-2 500 and junior K-1 1,000.
The competition will determine Canadian team members for the World Cup paddling events in May and June and those World Cups will help determine the Canadian team for the world championships this August.
“The World Cup is part of the selection process and a strong performance there in some events can get you on the world team right away,” said Barton. “The selections races at trials #2 (July 17-18) in Montreal will be the final selection opportunity for the worlds.”
The trials are also a selection process to determine a group of paddlers eligible for the 2011 world junior championships. That group will compete this summer at the Lake Placid International Regatta. In addition the junior and under-23 squad will be finalized for two international events in June.
“The trials are also an opportunity for some of our younger paddlers to potentially challenge the veterans,” said Barton. “In addition this is our first opportunity to see how our paddlers will fare in the 200 metre events which is the new Olympic distance.”
Competition starts on Saturday and Sunday at 8:30 a.m. both days.
The Olympic Basin is situated at Parc Jean-Drapeau.
The selections for all teams will be finalized on Monday May 17.
